Breng een lied tot leven <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Al doe je nog zo je best om een lied mooi te zingen en klinkt het helemaal niet slecht, maar op de ene of andere manier mist er iets. De uitvoering van een song valt of staat met het uitdragen van de \u201cziel\u201d ervan. Dat klinkt misschien zweveriger dan het is, maar komt neer op de sfeer en wat voor gevoel het bij de luisteraar oproept, de essentie van het lied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het begint bij de muziek en de melodie: wat voor gevoel roept het bij je op en wat voor gevoel wil jij bij jouw luisteraar oproepen? Wat voor sfeer heeft het lied: liefde, angst, hoop, wanhoop, vrijheid, gezelligheid, etc? Als het geen instrumentaal nummer is, heeft het of wordt er gezongen zonder tekst door middel van improvisatie? Roept de muziek dezelfde sfeer en hetzelfde gevoel op als de tekst? Ondersteunt de muziek de tekst?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel sommige luisteraars niet zo precies naar teksten luisteren, is deze voor jou als zanger(es) essentieel! De songtekst heeft vaak veel betekenis en het is belangrijk dat je je bewust bent van de potenti\u00eble invloed en gevoelens ervan bij de luisteraar. \u201cFight Song\u201d van Rachel Platten is voor veel jonge meiden een soort lijflied. In veel van Disney\u2019s liedjes worden de teksten muzikaal ondersteund qua betekenis en sfeer, daarom scoren ze ook zo goed. In sommige liedjes is de link echter niet zo voor de hand liggend. Bijvoorbeeld in sommige Braziliaanse samba nummers is de muziek vrolijk, maar zijn de teksten wat verdrietig of melancholiek. Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is \u201cA Felicidade\u201d in de uitvoering van Eliane Elias, een ogenschijnlijk vrolijke samba, waarbij bezongen wordt hoe \u201cverdriet geen einde kent, maar geluk wel. Geluk is als een veer die door de wind gedragen wordt, zo licht. Maar het is van korte duur\u201d. Het lied speelt in carnaval tijd en dat wordt ondersteund door de samba muziek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Er zijn ook veel songs waarvan de tekst een dubbele betekenis heeft: \u00e9\u00e9n van de bekendste is natuurlijk \u201cBrown Sugar\u201d van the Rolling Stones, waarbij de bruine suiker naar hero\u00efne verwijst. Maar er zijn ook modernere voorbeelden: in Rihanna\u2019s \u201cUmbrella\u201d, is de paraplu een symbool voor een condoom. De tekst in \u201cPoker Face\u201d van Lady Gaga kan gezien worden als een tekst over gokken, maar zij gaf zelf toe dat zij in de tekst ook refereert aan gevoelens over vrouwen tijdens sex met een man, de song hint dus ook naar bisexualiteit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waar begin je met het je eigen maken van een songtekst?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De werkwijze is min of meer hetzelfde voor bestaande liedjes als zelfgeschreven teksten. Om met een songtekst aan de slag te gaan kun je die misschien het beste uitprinten op papier. Ja, dat is ouderwets, maar wel handig als je aantekeningen wilt maken. Die maak je overigens het makkelijkst in potlood, zo kun je je idee\u00ebn over de tekst weer uitgummen als je ze wilt aanpassen of niet meer nodig zou hebben. De volgende stap is de tekst grondig te lezen, zonder de muziek op de achtergrond. Waar gaat het over? Wat is de sfeer? Is er een onderliggende boodschap? Lees je tekst een paar keer voor alsof je het verhaal aan een toehoorder zou vertellen, vergeet daarbij de muziek en de melodie even en focus puur op de woorden en het verhaal. Als je dit een paar keer achter elkaar doet, zul je het verhaal misschien iedere keer een beetje anders vertellen. Waar liggen de verschillen? Leg je misschien ergens de nadruk op en bij de volgende keer ergens anders?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nu je de tekst grondig hebt bekeken rijst de vraag: hoe breng je de betekenis en sfeer ervan over op je luisteraar? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Met je stem kun je veel toevoegen aan de sfeer van een lied. Hoe meer beheersing je hebt over je stem, des te meer kun je die nuances in je stem gebruiken voor interpretatie. Zanglessen helpen je om deze controle over je stem te ontwikkelen en verder uit te bouwen. Zo krijg je ook meer mogelijkheden om met je stem de interpretatie van een lied kracht bij te zetten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een voor de hand liggend voorbeeld is dynamiek: voor sommige (delen van) teksten is het belangrijk om heel beheerst en zacht te zingen, terwijl je bij andere teksten of delen ervan gas moet geven of belten. Wees niet bang om eens midden in een lied gas terug te nemen als het past in de teksten en de muziek. Je trekt als het ware de aandacht van de luisteraar naar je toe en bouwt een spanningsboog op naar de finale van een lied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behalve dynamiek kun je ook denken aan het toevoegen van een beetje verdrietig geluid, of aan zogenaamde \u201ctwang\u201d om het meer scherpte te geven of om juist met meer lucht te zingen voor kwetsbaarheid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Versiersels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afhankelijk van de muziekstijl, kun je hier en daar wat \u201cversieren\u201d door aan sommige woorden of lettergrepen vibrato toevoegen of riffs en runs. Artiesten als Ariana Grande en Tori Kelly zijn daar heel goed in. Vergelijk de versies van \u201cDon\u2019t You Worry \u2018Bout A Thing\u201d:  de originele versie van Stevie Wonder en dan die van Tori Kelly. Als je luistert naar het laatste deel vanaf \u201cEverybody needs a change\u201d in de originele versie van Stevie hoor je dat hij de nadruk legt op \u201cworry\u2019 en alles zonder veel franje zingt. Tori Kelly daarentegen rijgt aan veel woorden riffs en maakt gecompliceerde runs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een veel gebruikt middel in popmuziek, is het herhalen van woorden om te benadrukken en zodat ze goed onthouden worden door de luisteraar. Je kunt natuurlijk ook woorden of kreten toevoegen, OOOH, MMMM, yeah! bijvoorbeeld. De eerder genoemde Tori Kelly doet dat veel, ook in \u201cDon\u2019t You Worry \u2018Bout a Thing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heb je er wel eens aan gedacht om voor of na woorden of zinnen een pauze te laten vallen? Zo\u2019n pauze kan heel effectief zijn om iets te benadrukken of spanning op te bouwen. Een andere mogelijkheid is het verkorten van een lettergreep of juist het verlengen van een noot. Luister eens naar Kurt Elling\u2019s versie van \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know What Love Is\u201d. Hij verlengt bijvoorbeeld het woord \u201cknow\u201d schijnbaar een eeuwigheid. Wat voor effect heeft dat? Luister ook eens naar een andere versie van hetzelfde lied, door Billie Holiday. Wat valt je op? Afgezien van een totaal ander muzikaal arrangement, zingt Billie de woorden veel meer op een gesproken manier en legt ze meer de nadruk legt op woorden zoals \u201cmeaning\u201d door de lettergrepen te scheiden. Beide versies van hetzelfde lied hebben zo\u2019n andere sfeer, niet alleen door de andere muzikale stijl, maar ook door de verschillende manieren waarop de artiesten met de tekst omgaan. Afhankelijk van de muzieksoort kun je soms heel vrij met timing omgaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als je zelf aan de slag gaat met een liedje, kun je de door jou gezongen (delen van) het liedje opnemen en op verschillende manier zingen. Met pauzes, met vibrato, met dynamiek\u2026 pas die eens toe op verschillende delen van dezelfde zin. Luister dan terug naar de verschillende versies van wat je opgenomen hebt en kies wat je het beste bevalt. Door dit toe te passen, wordt een lied veel meer jouw song! Veel plezier met uitproberen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give life to a song<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Even when you try to sing a song beautifully and it doesn\u2019t sound half bad, something seems to be missing. A song needs to be performed with \u201csoul\u201d to capture the listener. This may sound a bit floaty, but it all boils down to the atmosphere and feeling a song evokes in a listener, basically the essence of the a song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all starts with the music and the melody: what kind of feeling is evoked in you and what kind of emotions do you want to evoke in your audience? What is the song\u2019s atmosphere: love, fear, hope, desperation, freedom, cosiness, etc? If a tune is not instrumental, does it have lyrics or is the singer improvising without lyrics? Does the music evoke the same atmosphere and emotions as the lyrics? Is the music supporting the lyrics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some listeners do not pay close attention to lyrics, but they are essential for you a singer! Lyrics can often carry lots of meaning and it is important for you to be aware of its potential influence and feelings with the audience. \u201cFight song\u201d by Rachel Platten is a kind of anthem for many young girls. In many Disney songs, the music supports the lyrics in meaning and atmosphere, that is one of the reasons they do so well. In many songs, however, the link between music and lyrics is not that obvious. In some Brazilian Samba for instance music the lyrics can be quite sad or melancholy, but the music is quite uplifting. Take \u201cA Felicidade\u201d performed by Eliane Elias, a seemingly cheerful samba, where the lyrics speak of \u201cSadness has no end, happiness yes\u2026Happiness is like the feather that the wind will carry through the air. It flies so lightly, but it is shortlived.\u201d The samba music supports the song being set in Carnival time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many songs in which the lyrics have a hidden meaning: one of the most well-known is \u201cBrown Sugar\u201d by the Rolling Stones, the brown sugar refers to heroine. There are of course more modern examples: Rihanna\u2019s \u201cUmbrella\u201d is a symbol for a condom. The lyrics in \u201cPoker Face\u201d by Lady Gaga can be interpreted as being about gambling, but she also admitted the lyrics referring to her feelings for women while having sex with a man, the song hints to bisexuality as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do you start when adding a personal touch to a song?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First off: it does not matter much whether you are working with an already existing song or with your own lyrics. To start working with lyrics, it is practical to print them out on paper. Yes, that is very old fashioned, but practical to make notes on them. You make the notes in pencil, this way you can erase them if you want to adjust or do not need the anymore. The next step is to read the lyrics thoroughly, with out the music in the background. What are they about? What is the atmosphere? Is there an underlying message? Read the lyrics aloud a few times as if you were telling the story to a listener. Forget the music and melody when you do that and focus purely on the words and the story. When you do this a couple of times in a row, you may read it slightly differently each time. What are the differences? Do you emphasise words differently in one version or the next one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that you have analysed the lyrics, the question is: how do you convey the meaning and atmosphere to your audience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your voice is a tool to add to the atmosphere of a song. The more control you have over your voice, the more nuances you can weave into the song to voice your interpretation. Singing lessons will help you to gain control over your voice and develop it further. This way you can develop more ways to make your interpretation even more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dynamics are a fairly obvious choice to influence the song: some parts of lyrics may need to be sung controlled and softly, while other lyrics or parts of them need more power or even a belt. Do not be afraid to reduce the volume in the middle of the song if it suits the lyrics or music. You draw in the attention of the listener this way and build up a bit of tension before moving to the finale of the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except for dynamics you could also use some cry to create sadness, use so-called \u201ctwang\u201d to give it a sharper sound or you could sing with a bit more breath for vulnerability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embellishments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the musical  genre, you could add some embellishments by adding a vibrato or riffs and runs to certain words or syllables. Artists like Ariana Grande or Tori Kelly are true masters at this. Why don\u2019t you compare the versions of \u201cDon\u2019t You Worry \u2018Bout A Thing\u201d in the original version by Stevie Wonder with the version by Tori Kelly. When you listen to the last verse starting from \u201cEverybody needs a change\u201d in the original version, you can hear Stevie emphasising words like \u201cworry\u201d, but not using any embellishments. Tori Kelly on the other hand, adds a lot of riffs and complicated runs to words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A much-used tool in pop music is repeating words for emphasis and so you remember them well as a listener. You can also add words or sounds like OOOH, MMMM or yeah! The above-mentioned Tori Kelly does that a lot, also in \u201cDon\u2019t You Worry \u2018Bout a Thing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrasing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you considered to use a pause before or after certain words or phrases? A pause can be an effective tool to emphasise something or build up tension. Another option is shortening a word or the opposite: elongating it.. Take a listen to Kurt Elling\u2019s version of \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know What Love Is\u201d. He lengthens the word \u201cknow\u201d for what it feels like an eternity. What is the effect of that? Please listen to Billie Holiday\u2019s version of the same song. What do you notice? Apart from a completely different arrangement, Billie sings the words in a much more spoken manner and emphasises words like \u201cmeaning\u201d by separating the syllables. Both versions of the same song have such a different atmosphere, not just because they are different stylistically, but also because the different ways the artists work with the lyrics. Depending on the musical genre you sometimes have quite a bit of freedom in phrasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To learn how to develop your own version and interpretation it is wise to listen to many different versons of songs. Many old standards were covered by different artists. \u201cNatural Woman\u201d by Carole King is good example. Many of Adele\u2019s songs have been covered too. Listen to the different versions and notice what is different in interpretation and how they convey that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When working on a song yourself, you can record your singing (parts of) the song and sing them differently each time. With pauses, vibrato, with dynamics\u2026apply them to different parts of the same sentence. Listen back to the different versions you have recorded and choose the best option. By applying this, you can make a tune your song! Have fun trying things out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
