You have probably heard about them at some point: SOVT exercises, short for semi-occluded vocal tract exercises. In these exercises your vocal tract is (partially) closed, by your lips or your tongue for instance. The obstruction causes part of the sound waves to get sent back towards your vocal folds and to energise them to vibrate. This way your vocal folds have to make less effort for singing or speaking and that makes the SOVT exercises ideal for warming up or cooling down your voice or working with your voice after a cold or overuse.
Below are some of my favourite SOVT exercises.
Gentle voice exercise: lip bubble.
Check the video on how to do it. Did you find it difficult to do the exercise? Book a lesson and we’ll work on it together!
Massage for the vocal cords: the squeaky door.
This is also a favourite SOVT exercise. It might seem weird, but is like a massage for your vocal folds. Want to try? The video shows you why it is called the squeaky door!
