Transponeren / Transposing

Soms is de toonsoort van een lied niet ideaal: het is te hoog of te laag voor de zanger(es) of lastig te spelen voor sommige instrumenten. In dat geval moet je muziek omzetten in een andere toonsoort, oftewel transponeren.

Hoe doe je dat? Om te beginnen neem je eerst de originele toonsoort, dan probeer je stapje voor stapje welke toonsoort je beter ligt: omhoog als de muziek te laag is en omlaag als de muziek te hoog is. Met behulp van de chromatische cirkel hieronder kijk je welke nieuwe toonsoort daarbij past. Elke stap in de cirkel is gelijk aan een halve toon in de muziek. Als je naar boven wilt transponeren, dan ga je met de klok mee en als je naar beneden wilt transponeren ga je tegen de klok in. 

Sometimes the key of a song is not ideal: it is either too high or too low for the singer or difficult to play for the musicians. In that case you have to transfer the key of the song to a new key that is a better fit: this is called transposing a song.

So how do you do that? You first take the original key and then try to find a more suitable key step by step: up if the music is too low and down if the music is too high. Using the chromatic circle below you then find the new suitable key. Each step in the circle is equal to a semi-tone in music. If you would like to transpose upwards, you move clockwise in the circle. If you want to transpose downward, you move counter-clockwise.

Voorbeeld: je wilt je lied transponeren van E (omlaag) naar Db, dan ga je vanuit E 3 stapjes tegen de klok in naar Db (in de cirkel is dat aan de rechterkant omhoog!). In de muziek zijn dit 3 halve stappen, oftewel een kleine terts naar beneden.

Als je bladmuziek naar de nieuwe toonsoort transponeert, moet je alle akkoorden èn alle noten naar de nieuwe toonsoort veranderen met hetzelfde aantal stapjes. Soms werken muzikanten alleen met akkoorden, dan hoef je alleen de akkoorden te veranderen.

Mocht je nog niet goed noten kunnen lezen of nog niet zo goed kunnen transponeren, dan heb ik een handig hulpmiddel voor je gemaakt: de noten transponeren tool. Zo kun je de noten en de tegenhangers heel makkelijk langs elkaar leggen en de noten en akkoorden transponeren. Niet alle toonsoorten staan erin, alleen de meest gebruikte, want veel muzikanten vinden het vervelend om stukken te spelen in toonsoorten met veel kruizen of b’s.

Nadat je de toonsoort hebt uitgevonden maak je een opzet, waarbij je de noten van de originele toonsoort en de noten van de nieuwe toonsoort tegenover elkaar zet. Met jouw transponeer opzet vervang je alle oude akkoorden en noten heel gemakkelijk door de nieuwe. 

Vergeet niet aan het begin van het muziekstuk, naast de muzieksleutel, aan te geven om welke toonsoort het gaat door het bijbehorende aantal kruizen of b’s erin te zetten.

Example: you would like to transpose your song from the key of E (downwards) to Db. From E in the circle, you take 3 steps counter-clockwise to Db (in the circle this is 3 steps up on the right-hand side!)

When transposing sheet music to the new key, you have to transpose all chords and notes to the new key with the same amount of steps as above. In some cases musicians only work with chords, in that case you only need to transpose the chords.

With this tool, you can easily compare the old notes with the new one and use it for transposing. I have not included all keys in the tool, only the most-used ones as musicians are usually not very eager to play music in keys with many sharps or bs.

After finding the right key for you, you make a transposition set-up lining up the notes of the original key opposite the notes of the new key.  You then replace all the old chords and notes with the new ones using the set-up.

Remember to add the appropriate amount of sharps (hashtags) or bs next to the clef at the beginning of the piece to mark the correct key signature.
